The Jade Sun

Updated: Sep 18, 2020

When I woke up this morning, the sun was green. This came as a great surprise. In terms of its lifecycle, today should not have been the day that the sun suddenly shifted its color. Surely it must be in my head, a lingering fragment of dream. I rubbed my eyes, splashed water over my face, and closed all the blinds and reopened them, but it did not make a difference. On my morning walk I greeted my new cyan sky, walked under the swaying branches of newly camouflaged trees, and watched a forest green Labrador urinate on a brown fire hydrant. The main street was buzzing with traffic of all sorts. I watched as little eddies of yellow-green litter fluttered about in the breeze. Then the sky blinked as if it just took a photograph, and I saw her.

I fell to the ground, terrified. The zipper of my bookbag came undone, and the contents flew everywhere. People just walked around me as if nothing was happening in the world, didn't even bother to help with my things.

"Would you get out of the sidewalk...lunatic," a stranger said to me. I scurried away on all fours and onto the grass, pointing up at the gigantic woman peering down from the sky.

"Can't you see her? Anyone?" I asked frantically. Pedestrians, too busy heading to work, just gave me weird looks and kept on moving along.

"She's right there!" I said to them, "there, alongside the fucking green sun!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. But no one cared or seemed to notice. I closed my eyes, hoping that the woman in the sky would go away. When I opened them, she was still there, and the sun was still green. The enormous woman—who I admit was quite pretty—smiled and pointed down towards me. She moved her lips, and I heard the muffled words when she said to someone, "aw, that one's cute." And just like that, she walked out of sight, somewhere behind the sun.

And as her golden hair faded into an eclipse of the sun, a soothing voice lulled my consciousness with these words:

Little boy, little boy, little boy, little boy,

Will you follow me into the green sun?

Is their world not muddled in color?

La-la, le-le, our little bundle of joy

We follow not the crimson sun,

The dark dance of the shadowed moon,

As they step over you,

Know we are here, do not run,

we maidens of the jade sun

Leave them all by the wayside,

As they leave you behind.

Oh worshiper of the divine sun,

Don't try explaining to them,

just come.

Come Inside, Come Inside,

come inside..

come inside...

The song repeated, each time becoming more and more faint. I sat down on the blurred grass, reached into my backpack, and found a large crystal. This wasn't there before. I turned it over again and again in my hands as the soothing song continued to soften my last ripples of consciousness. As if activated by the warmth within me, the crystal started to cloud and swirl with color. It was dancing in crimson flame. I looked up at the green sun and a misty shadow started crawling over it - an eclipse. When I stared back at the crystal, it too was becoming obfuscated in a dark, misty shadow. When the sun and crystal both fell into shadow, the world plummeted into complete darkness. And although I could not see, I felt that once again the street was empty. All was quiet. A gentle wind stirred, and pieces of litter fluttered in the breeze. I closed my eyes, and dreamt of her.
